For complex social-ecological systems, particularly urban environments, resilience stems from many interrelated attributes. There may be trade-offs between alternative approaches to increasing resilience, for example over short and long time frames. The Institute can play a role in exploring these tradeoffs and building agreement. SRI@JB strives to engage diverse stakeholder groups (in the broadest sense of the term) to explore the indicators of resilience that are recognized across different groups, and to build agreement on management strategies and options. SRI@JB also strives to couple policy with science by channeling research results into comprehensive decision-making frameworks that model the consequences of alternative management actions, account for uncertainty, and potentially iterate over multiple actions to adaptively manage the system.
